Contagion Effects in Intertemporal Decision Making

چکیده
Prior research has provided substantial insight into individuals’ intertemporal preferences (i.e., preferences about delayed rewards). The present study instead investigated the preferences of small groups of individuals asked to express collective intertemporal decisions. The paradigm consisted of three phases. During the PreCollaboration and Post-Collaboration phases participants completed an intertemporal matching task individually. During the Collaboration phase participants completed a similar task in small groups, reaching mutually agreed-upon decisions. Results suggest that group preferences were systematically related to group members’ Pre-Collaboration preferences. In addition, collaborative decision making altered group members’ intertemporal preferences. Furthermore, it was found that individuals’ PostCollaboration preferences were independently related to both their Pre-Collaboration preferences and the preferences of other group members, suggesting that individuals’ Post-Collaboration preferences represented a revision of their Pre-Collaboration preferences based on the preferences observed in other group members.

متن کاملThe additive property of the inconsistency degree in intertemporal decision making through the generalization of psychophysical laws
Intertemporal decision making involves choices among options whose effects occur at different moments. These choices are influenced not only by the effect of rewards value perception at different moments, but also by the time perception effect. One of the main difficulties that affect standard experiments involving intertemporal choices is the simultaneity of both effects on time discounting. I...
متن کاملIntertemporal Decision-Making Involves Prefrontal Control Mechanisms Associated with Working Memory.
Intertemporal decision-making involves simultaneous evaluation of both the magnitude and delay to reward, which may require the integrated representation and comparison of these dimensions within working memory (WM). In the current study, neural activation associated with intertemporal decision-making was directly compared with WM load-related activation. During functional magnetic resonance im...
متن کاملIntertemporal Decision-Making: Economic and Cognitive Perspectives
Intertemporal decision-making is a fundamental issue in the study of individual behavior. In this paper I review the economic approach to intertemporal decision-making by considering the behavioral assumptions that are implied by the Exponential and the Hyperbolic discounting models. Both approaches focus on how people evaluate utility ows over time. However, there is evidence showing that the...
متن کاملModelling the Role of Emotion Regulation and Contagion in Socially Affected Decision Making
In this paper a computational social agent model is presented that addresses how socially affected decision making relates to emotion contagion in interaction with emotion regulation. The model is illustrated by means of an example simulation and by more refined explorations of different scenarios showing the role of emotion regulation in the decision making. It is shown how in a social context...
